Many of us start the new year by resolving to look after our money more carefully, but for some people insolvency advice could save more than their finances – it might rescue your relationship too.

Figures from the Debt Advisory Centre reveal that one in six people in the UK currently owe at least some money to somebody that their partner does not know about.

It might be a small loan from friends or family – one in ten say the total amount is less than £100 – but 51% owe at least £1,000.

For some people the figures climb even higher; 8% owe over £10,000 and another 11% owe upwards of £5,000.

DAC spokesman Ian Williams said: “Having debt problems is an extremely stressful and isolating experience. Trying to deal with the situation on your own by keeping it secret from your partner will only compound the stress.

“Many people are embarrassed and ashamed to admit their money problems to their partner – but when they do, not only is a weight lifted from their shoulders, but it is easier to start to tackle the problem together.”

With professional personal insolvency advice in your corner too, you don’t have to tackle your finances alone – and 2015 could be the year you start to get back on your feet.
