Low temperatures and high utility bills spell trouble for healthcare accounting

Good healthcare accounting is not only about helping clients to minimise their tax bills; at times, it can simply be about helping you to afford to keep the heating on.

During the past few weeks, flurries of snowfall have landed across the UK on several occasions, and daytime temperatures have only risen to double digits a handful of times in 2013 so far.

For staff like nurses and home care assistants, UNISON claim this is leading to high gas and electricity bills – and many of its members are facing extremely difficult times as a result.

While 58% of those surveyed have already tried switching energy suppliers, 52% saw their bills stay just the same, and 23.4% actually saw their costs rise.

Members report that they are going to bed early just to stay warm, and some are even wearing clothes in bed to provide extra layers of insulation.

Dave Prentis, general secretary of UNISON, says: “Is it any wonder, when public service workers have been stuck on a three-year pay freeze, while prices just keep on going up?”
