Healthcare professionals’ need for medical accountants could rise in the years to come if doctors begin providing expert testimony on the legitimacy of whiplash claims.

A new report from price comparison site MoneySupermarket reveals that nine out of ten people would support more in-depth investigations into whiplash claims, in order to clamp down on fraudulent compensation payouts.

In its survey, the website explained the latest government proposals for tackling the problem, which include an independent panel of doctors to assess whiplash claims and determine whether they are genuine.

Just over a quarter (27%) of people supported the suggestions to help cut down on insurance premiums, which are inflated by the cost of false claims.

A further 66% were supportive simply out of a desire to tackle the ‘compensation culture’ that exists in the UK.

For doctors, this could mean an additional revenue stream, as many healthcare professionals are likely to be called on to serve on independent whiplash panels.

In turn, professional medical accountants can help to incorporate this revenue into annual incomes and determine the tax implications, for doctors who have not experienced such issues before.
