Our Manchester accountants can help you to understand your obligations as an employer – including the essential commitment to paying the National Minimum Wage to your workforce.
This legal standard is inescapable, and you need to be certain that, if your staff are being paid the NMW, you make the correct calculations of any holiday pay, sickness pay or deductions to their wages.
Without doing so, you could pay them less than the legal requirement – whether deliberately or unwittingly – and face being named and shamed as a consequence.
The government have just done exactly that to 70 firms nationwide, including four at Manchester addresses and others in Wigan, Blackpool and other north-west locations.
In some cases, individual members of staff were underpaid by just a few hundreds of pounds – significant to the individual no doubt, but hardly worth risking an entire company’s reputation over.
Care and support minister Norman Lamb said: “We want a fairer society where everyone gets the care they deserve – to do this we need a skilled, valued and fairly paid workforce.
“There is absolutely no excuse for employers that fail to pay the minimum wage.”
His comments relate to the current crackdown on activity in the care sector, which is the focus not only of NMW investigations, but also of HMRC inspections of the sector’s largest employers.
Whatever industry you are in though, the NMW is an essential commitment, and our Manchester accountants can help you to ensure you are meeting this obligation both now and in the years to come.
